Canva
Designing in Canva? Here's exactly how to export for print.
- Open your design in Canva, then click Share in the top-right corner
- Click Download
- Change "File type" to PDF Print (not "PDF Standard")
- Check the box for "Crop marks and bleed"
- Click Download — done!
That's it. "PDF Print" gives us a high-resolution, color-correct file. "Crop marks and bleed" adds a tiny strip of extra design around the edges so nothing gets accidentally trimmed at the cutter.
Not using Canva? Here's what we need. (click to expand)
Resolution300 DPI recommended (150 DPI minimum). Phone photos shot in full resolution are fine. Screenshots from a website are not.
Color modeCMYK, not RGB. Screens and printers use different color systems — CMYK is the printer one. In Illustrator or Photoshop, convert your document to CMYK before exporting.
BleedAdd 0.125" of extra design on all four edges — prevents a thin white border if the cut shifts slightly. Hardcover book covers need 0.8" bleed so the artwork can wrap around the boards. Canva's "Crop marks and bleed" handles this automatically.
Safe zoneKeep text and logos at least 0.25" from the trim edge. On bound products (books, booklets, programs) keep content at least 0.5" from the spine edge so nothing disappears into the binding.
Best formatPDF with bleed included. Also fine: AI, EPS, PSD, TIFF, or a high-res JPG at 300 DPI or better.
